Just two 1 hour documentaries on the Matrix series. These featurettes are a series of interviews with various professors and teachers, all leaders in their fields. They delve into the deeper aspects of the Matrix series and show, where the influences may have came from and what are the real possibilities of something like the Matrix ever existing, or indeed presently existing. The first of these featurettes is Return to the Source: Philosophy & The Matrix which looks at the various philosophical aspects of the films, from the psychological to the religious.

In this new three-part series for BBC Two, Dr Thomas Asbridge presents his revelatory account of the Crusades, the 200-year war between Christians and Muslims for control of the Holy Land. The story of the Crusades is remembered as a tale of religious fanaticism and unspeakable violence, but now fresh research, eyewitness testimony, and contemporary evidence from both the Christian and Islamic worlds shed new light on how these two great religions waged war in the name of God.

This 40-minute documentary was one of the first commercially released DVDs. It should serve as a welcome introduction for those who are interested in but know little about the tropical rainforest and the process of deforestation. The script, however, provides little in the way of concrete information regarding the images on screen at any given time. The intended effect appears to be poetic (a la Henry David Thoreau), but the narration tends to veer toward the New Age. This could prove frustrating for those who would like to know exactly what species of plant or animal is being featured and what makes it unique to the rainforest. Further, indigenous peoples and their relationship to the world's rainforests is not explored.

Originally released in 1973 but never before available on DVD, PAINTERS PAINTING is the definitive documentary on the New York School of painters, from 1940-1970. Director Emile de Antonio (Point of Order and Millhouse) interviews artists in their studios about their art from the period of Abstract Expressionism, through Hard Edge and Color Field painting to Pop Art.

Two years in the making, Pedigree Dogs Exposed lifts the lid on the extent of health and welfare problems in pedigree dogs, caused by decades of inbreeding and breeding primarily for "beauty" rather than health and function. Supported by strong testimony from top experts, the film argues that, without radical reform, many of our best-loved breeds face extinction.

"Nevermind" was the second album from the Seattle trio and the first on the DGC label (it's predecessor "Bleach" was released on the Sub Pop label). It was produced by Butch Vig (also the drummer for the band Garbage) and mixed by Andy Wallace.

This co-production with Dickens 2012 not only encapsulates the history of Dickens's time, but also of the 100 years in which his work has survived most acutely on screen. It is not only the stories, themes and characters of Dickens's writing that translate so well onto screen - Sergei Eisenstein argued that there is something essentially filmic in his unique prose style; that Dickens's rapid 'cutting' within scenes and from scene to scene coupled with his seamless mixture of the bizarrely comic with the terrifyingly profound was itself proto-cinematic. Dickens wrote the way a camera saw before film had been invented and he remains to this day the most cinematic of writers.

Living amongst the colony of 200,000 King penguins near the Antarctic ice-cap and during 40 days of live-action filming, Nigel explores the real-life drama and experiences the day-to-day soap opera of their lives. He also witnesses extraordinary sights from the other main inhabitants of this area - the 6,000 Southern Elephant seals.

The film is narrated in English and was made exclusively by the Russian authorities of that time. Whether or not the narrator of the film gives a fair and balanced account of the events leading up to the defendants being brought to trial ought be decided by the viewer. I am not a historian.
